What is Number of Demat Account?

What is a DPID?

The Depository Participant assigns a unique 16-digit account code to the demat account holder in order to enable electronic trading. Any investor is provided with information about their account, including the demat number, when the demat accounts are opened. In the case of CDSL, demat account number can also be called Beneficiary ID. This number is necessary for trading in any product. Each account is assigned a unique code. This code does not reflect the identity of the account holder, but rather a number called demat account number.

How can I locate my demat number?

The common question is:How can I locate my demat number? Investors are assigned a demat number when the demat account is opened. The Depositories are NSDL (National Securities Depository Ltd.), and CDSL (Central Depository Services Ltd.). Depending on the needs and services of the investor, the Depositories NSDL can assign the number and CDSL (Central Depository Services Ltd.).
The format of a demat account varies depending on who assigned it. CDSL assigns a code that is 16 digits long, while NSDL gives a code of 14 digits.
CDSL's demat account number can be 01234567890967664, whereas NSDL's can be IN12345668709878787. All trades in share trading are tracked by their numbers.

Depository participant is essentially an intermediary. There are two types: investors and depositories. A DP is required to verify a demat account. This will prevent trading of shares. Any registered broking company with SEBI may act as a depository participant.

Let's see how DPID differs from demat account numbers.

We should not confuse DP ID with demat account number. They are not identical. The demat account number is a number that is assigned to an investor when the demat accounts are opened. While the DP ID is for the DP, it is an identification number.
Let's take, for example, the relationship between DP ID number and demat account numbers.
Demat Account Number=DP ID+ ClientID
The Client ID is an ID that identifies the portfolio of the investor.

  • CDSL: Your demat account number for CDSL is 1234567891234567.
    1. 12345678 is the DP ID
    2. Client ID is 91234567
  • If you have NSDL, your demat number is IN34567891234567.
    1. DP ID is IN345678
    2. Client ID is 91234567

As long as your demat account is with the same provider, the Client ID will remain the same.

It is now much easier than ever to open a demat online account without any hassles in under 15 minutes.
